Man dedicates his 20s to travelling the world - then lists his worst experiences

Drew Goldberg grew up in Arizona and began travelling in Europe during a semester abroad in Prague for his third year of university. He caught the travel bug – and on graduating shunned the idea of a corporate job and decided to teach English in Seoul.

While spending 18 months teaching, Mr Goldberg managed to travel to 20 more countries in Asia. He left his job this January and has since travelled to 30 new countries.

From the first day of his travels back in university, Mr Goldberg set up a blog - The Hungry Partier - to document his adventures, and has accumulated over 120 thousand followers across his social media platforms.

He travels alone, sharing what he gets up to on Snapchat and Instagram under the username @drewbinsky. He says he works “anywhere there is a wifi signal”.

The worst travel experiences

Food – The Philippines

“Although it’s one of my favourite countries in the world, the food is so plain. It usually consists of white rice with some fish on top. I need some more variety in my food.”

Nightlife – Brunei

“Most Islamic countries have strict policies on drinking and serving alcohol, so the nightlife is virtually non-existent. I was in the capital city called Bandar Seri Begawan on a Friday night, and the streets were so empty that I could hear a pin drop from 20 metres away.”

Rudest People – Egypt

“I was recently in Cairo about 5 weeks ago, and I had bad experiences with almost every person I met. They were very aggressive people – I saw 3 different fights break out on the streets.”

Wifi Access – Myanmar

“I absolutely adore Myanmar, but the country is about 20 years behind its neighbours. I did find wifi in the big cities, but it was about as slow as dial up internet from the 90s. Although I suspect that this will change in the next 3-5 years, as tourism in Myanmar is exploding in popularity due to forgiving visa restrictions.”

Most overrated – Kuala Lumpur

“I had heard so many good things about Kuala Lumpur as I was travelling around Asia, but when I got there it was just a really boring version of Bangkok. It was also a bit unsafe – I was traveling with my friend and she was verbally harassed on the streets.”

Most expensive – London

“I went to London for the first time about 2 months ago, and I had very high expectations. But to be honest, nothing really impressed me other than the fish n’ chips. The expensive prices were the biggest turn off for me, especially as a budget traveller.”
